Learning Outcomes: Gross Motor Development and Body Awareness

Expected set up time: 5 minutes

You’ll need
  • Blankets (as many as you want)
  • Music (optional)
You can warm up to The Polkadots Animal Stretch song. Download it free here! (Click on the link to listen to the song. Right click on the link and save the song to your computer.)
How to

Place your blankets out around the floor as close or as far apart as you want. This will challenge how far your child has to jump from puddle to puddle. Turn on the music and start jumping from puddle to puddle. When the music stops choose a Polkadot Yoga move to do on the puddle where you stopped. Do each yoga move 3 times then start the music again. Maybe choose 3 or 4 yoga moves to focus on and repeat. If you are not familiar with some of Polkadots Yoga moves, watch them here.

Think about this

Yoga helps children with Gross Motor Development and Body Awareness as physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves. (information found on yogajournal.com)

Look up images of animals stretching on the internet or from books in the library and see if you can make up your own yoga moves with your child. Remember to take that moment.
